Trail or Park of the Week: Lehigh Gap Nature Center in Slatington
This week's Trail or Park of the Week is Lehigh Gap Nature Center, a 756-acre wildlife refuge in Slatington, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, where the Lehigh River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge. It is the only place in the region where the 165-mile Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (D&L) Trail connects with the Appalachian Trail, and its network holds more than 13 miles of hiking trails at the western edge of the Lehigh Valley. Here is what to expect, where to park, and the best time to go this late-October.
Trail Highlights
Lehigh Gap Nature Center administers the 756-acre Lehigh Gap Wildlife Refuge on the Kittatinny Ridge, and the refuge is the only place where the D&L Trail and the Appalachian Trail meet, which makes it a natural crossing point for long-distance trail users. The higher trails open onto broad views of the Lehigh River below and the surrounding ridgelines, and the flat D&L rail trail runs along the river at the base of the gap. Late October is when the forested slopes of the ridge reach peak fall color and the fall raptor migration moves through the gap.
- 🌱 13+ miles of hiking trails across the 756-acre refuge, from short connectors to multi-mile ridge loops.
- 🏛 D&L Trail and Appalachian Trail meet here: the only place in the region where the 165-mile D&L corridor connects with the Appalachian Trail.
- 🚗 Lehigh & New England (LNE) Trail: a 2.75-mile route with higher views over the Lehigh River from the open slope at the gap.
- 🐦 Bake Oven Knob: an Appalachian Trail viewpoint within the refuge and one of eastern Pennsylvania's known hawk-watching points during the fall raptor migration.
Trail Length and Difficulty
The refuge's trails range from short, easy connectors to longer, harder climbs onto the ridge. Documented route options include the LNE-Bobolink-D&L loop at about 2.2 miles and rated easy, the Prairie Warbler-Woodpecker-Appalachian-Charcoal-LNE loop at about 3.6 miles and rated moderate, the North Trail to L&NE loop via the Appalachian Trail at about 6.7 miles and rated hard, and a D&L Trail to Appalachian Trail loop of about 7 miles round trip and rated difficult. The flattest option is the D&L rail trail itself, a wide, mostly packed-stone trail along the Lehigh River that is also part of the 165-mile corridor. Because the ridge routes climb steeply in places and cross rocky, partly open slopes, it is worth matching a route to your group's experience and footwear.
The Lehigh Gap and Its Restoration
The Lehigh Gap is the water gap where the Lehigh River passes through the Kittatinny Ridge. The New Jersey Zinc Company operated two zinc smelters at the base of the ridge in Palmerton from 1898 until 1980, and emissions from the plants caused the widespread loss of trees on about 4,000 acres of Blue Mountain. In 1983 the roughly 3,000-acre Palmerton Zinc Pile site was listed on the Superfund National Priorities List. Lehigh Gap Nature Center was created in 2003 and is the only nature center in the nation established on a Superfund site; it acquired roughly 750 to 756 acres of the damaged land and carried out a three-phase plan to acquire, revegetate, and open the property as a public nature center. The restoration used native, warm-season, zinc-tolerant prairie grasses whose deep root systems stabilized the contaminated soils, followed by aerial seeding of native grasses, wildflowers, and tree seed by the EPA in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2023. Today the refuge supports more than 200 native plant species, and the open, grass-covered southern slope of the gap is the reason the LNE Trail offers such wide views.
Amenities
The Osprey House, the visitor center at 8844 Paint Mill Road, has a nature store, public restrooms, drinking water, a picnic pavilion, a pollinator garden, classrooms, and a research library. Parking and restrooms at the Osprey House are wheelchair accessible, and a Lehigh River boat launch is located nearby. The refuge itself is open free of charge from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. The Osprey House is volunteer-staffed with limited hours that vary by season, so check lgnc.org or call (610) 760-8889 before planning your visit around the visitor center.
Parking and Trailheads
Parking is free at two main points. The Osprey House lot at 8844 Paint Mill Road in Slatington serves the visitor center and the interior trail network, and the D&L Trail trailhead on Paint Mill Road serves the rail trail along the river, with overflow parking available across the bridge in Walnutport. From the Osprey House lot you can reach the Prairie Warbler, Woodpecker, Appalachian, Charcoal, and LNE trails. From the D&L trailhead you can head either direction along the river-level rail trail, including the flat route through the gap toward Palmerton or toward Walnutport.
Best Time to Go
The refuge is open year-round from dawn to dusk, and late October is an excellent time to visit: the forested slopes of the Kittatinny Ridge are near or at peak fall color, and the cooler temperatures are comfortable for the climb up the ridge routes. Late October is also the heart of the fall raptor migration, and Bake Oven Knob is one of eastern Pennsylvania's known hawk-watching points, with its seasonal count running from August 15 through November 30. Weekday mornings are the quietest. The D&L rail trail is a dependable, flatter option any time, while the ridge trails are steep and rocky in places, so sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially after rain.
