Small Business Spotlight: Klein Farms Dairy & Creamery
This month's Small Business Spotlight shines on Klein Farms Dairy & Creamery in Easton, a working family dairy farm that has been in operation since 1935. Now in its third generation of the Klein family, the farm runs an on-site dairy store and farm market where visitors can buy milk, cheese, eggs, meats, seasonal produce, and homemade ice cream straight from the source. It is a slice of Lehigh Valley farm country just minutes from downtown Easton.
What They Offer
Klein Farms is a working farm, and the on-farm Dairy Store is where its products go straight to customers. The shelves hold raw milk, gourmet and aged cheeses, yogurt, and the drinkable yogurt the farm calls "Smoogurt," along with eggs, farm-raised beef, pork, and chicken, seasonal produce, and baked goods. Just inside the store, Happy Holstein Ice Cream scoops homemade ice cream every day, made on site from the farm's own dairy with no artificial colors or flavors, with more than 20 flavors that rotate through the year. The farm also offers tours and hosts events, making it a frequent stop for families and school groups across the region.
How Long They Have Been Around
The Klein family's dairy farm dates to 1935, when Roy and Ruth Klein started the operation after moving east from the Midwest. The farm has been in the family ever since, and it is now run by third-generation farmers Layne and Beth Klein, who raise their family on the same land. The on-site Dairy Store opened in October 2004 and moved into a new facility in 2016, the same year Happy Holstein Ice Cream launched as a partnership between the Klein family and Daniel Duffin of Riegelsville, who makes every batch. That is nearly nine decades of continuous family farming in Forks Township.
What Makes Them Special
What sets Klein Farms apart is that you can see where your food comes from. The farm runs about 150 owned acres plus additional rented ground, and the same herd that grazes the pasture supplies the milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream sold in the store. Ice cream is made in small batches on site, and the shelves change with the seasons as produce comes in. For many Lehigh Valley families, a visit to Klein Farms is part of the fall routine, whether they come for the farm store, the ice cream, or the chance to see the animals and tour the operation.
