Lock Ridge Furnace Museum is this week's Hidden Gem of the Week: a free, 59-acre county park built around a towering, castle-like stone iron furnace that stands at the edge of Alburtis, in southern Lehigh County. The furnace made pig iron from 1868 to 1921, and today its weathered stone stack rises out of the middle of open parkland, ringed by walking trails and early autumn color. It is one of the most unusual historic sites in the Lehigh Valley, and most people who drive past Alburtis on Route 100 have never stopped to see it.

How Lock Ridge Came to Be

The story begins with iron. The Lock Ridge Iron Company built the furnace in 1868 along the Catasauqua and Fogelsville Railroad, and the operation later ran under the Thomas Iron Company, one of the great names of the Lehigh Valley's iron age. The furnace smelted local limonite and magnetite ores with anthracite coal, sending pig iron out along the rails to mills and foundries across the region. It ran for more than half a century, until 1921, and it is remembered as one of the last anthracite iron furnaces still operating in the United States when the fires finally went out.

What You Will See

The park's centerpiece is the furnace itself: a massive, castle-like structure of dark stone with arched openings, a tall brick chimney, and the iron era's unmistakable industrial silhouette. The cast house and the base of the blast furnace are the best-preserved parts of the site, and the surrounding grounds hold furnace ruins, rail-era structures, and interpretive signs that walk you through how the iron was made. There is no admission fee, and the whole site is explored on self-guided walks through the park.

  • 🗺 Historic iron-making story: the furnace produced pig iron from local ores for more than 50 years, until 1921.
  • 📚 Guided tours: the Lehigh County Historical Society leads tours of the furnace complex on weekends from May through September.
  • 🌱 Nature trails and open lawns surround the furnace, making it easy to pair history with a walk or a picnic.

Why It Is a Hidden Gem

Lock Ridge is free, it is easy to reach, and it tells a story that is central to how the Lehigh Valley was built. The region's iron industry put Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton on the map in the 1800s, and this furnace is one of the few places where you can still stand at the foot of the machinery and feel the scale of that history. It is also a genuinely pleasant place to spend an hour: the furnace rises out of open, well-kept parkland at the edge of Alburtis, with trails, benches, and plenty of room for kids to run while the adults read the interpretive signs.

October is a lovely time to visit. The park sits at the edge of the borough where the Lehigh Valley opens up toward the South Mountain foothills, and the trees around the furnace were just beginning to turn on a recent afternoon. On a weekday you may have the whole site nearly to yourself.
