The 529-to-Roth Rollover: The Real Lesson Behind the 'Millionaire Kid Hack'
One of the most powerful financial gifts you can give a child: the time for compounding to work.
One of the most powerful financial gifts you can give a child isn't a toy. It's time.
A 529 plan can turn small, consistent contributions into a long runway for education, and federal law now gives families another option if some money remains unused.
Under SECURE 2.0, eligible 529 funds can potentially be rolled into the beneficiary's Roth IRA without federal income tax or penalty, subject to strict rules. The 529 generally must have been open for at least 15 years, recent contributions may be excluded, the Roth must belong to the 529 beneficiary, and the lifetime rollover limit is $35,000. The rollover is also constrained by annual IRA contribution limits and the beneficiary's earned income. CNBC and Forbes have highlighted these restrictions and the planning opportunity.
That makes the real lesson bigger than the "millionaire kid hack" headline: start early, invest consistently, understand the rules, and let compounding work.
But don't blindly copy the numbers in viral graphics. $100 a month for 18 years equals $21,600 of contributions, not $60,000. Investment growth could increase the balance substantially, but the actual result depends on returns, fees, timing and market performance. Likewise, a $35,000 529-to-Roth rollover generally cannot happen in one year because annual IRA limits apply.
The smartest wealth strategy is rarely a secret loophole. It's disciplined saving, long-term investing, tax awareness and giving money more time to compound.
For American families, that combination can be far more powerful than chasing the next financial trend.
